Study Skills - How Can YOU Help Your Kids? by Frank McGinty

Some years ago when touring the Scottish Highlands, I met a man who said something that's stuck with me.

Although quite advanced in years, he still enjoyed the routine of working his small croft. But didn't he feel the pace these days? Yes, he said, it's a day's work getting started.

In other words every day he had to gather up his strength and resolve, get out there and get going.

This pearl of wisdom is not only for crofters!

The same principle applies to our kids when they have to get down to serious home study or 'homework': "It's a day's work getting started!"

So how can we help our kids when their teachers aren't there to 'motivate' them?

There are a number of simple things we can do, but don't underestimate their effectiveness. Let's look at some.

Most important of all is a home study place to meet the student's needs.

So many students attempt to do their study in the living room or at the dining table where there are all kinds of distractions: people coming and going, the TV blaring, and so on.

Much better, then, to give the kids an area they see as their study space, even if it means making some sacrifices. It could be a new use for a spare room or just a quiet corner out of the way. If your kids can get online in their study area, so much the better.

Try to provide a table or a desk which is used for study sessions only, so that books and equipment can be left as they were.

It's so much easier when all you have to do is sit down and pick up from where you left off!

Another serious, but seemingly trivial, impediment is a lack of ready materials. How motivated do we think our kids will be when they're always asking: 'Anyone got a spare pencil?' or bemoaning the fact that, 'My worksheets are all mixed up!'

It's much easier for kids to feel organized and 'on top' when they've got all the required items for their study session:

Pens, pencils, notepads, binders or folders, plastic wallets or 'envelopes' for keeping individual pages in order, rulers, Scotch tape, erasers, a calculator, and so on.

Most students either have low-paying part-time jobs or rely on an allowance from their parents, so they tend to be appreciative when their parents help out with these items. Parents can also look on it as a sensible investment in their child's career.

The study room, of course, needs to be kept at a comfortable temperature and should be well-aired. There are no bigger barriers to the study habit than a lack of fresh air and an atmosphere that's either too stuffy or too chilly!

In some homes, especially if there's a big family, there's simply no room to set up a study space. Is there a way round this?

Why not see if relatives can help out? Often there's room in the grandparents' house, and they'd be pleased to see the kids pop in for some study sessions.

Or maybe your kids could team up with friends over at their house. But be careful! There could be a temptation to chat instead of getting the heads down!

In that case, check whether the school runs a Homework Club. Many schools are now doing this and it's proving a highly popular option. Sessions are held after school and supervised by teachers - so the work gets done!

You provide the materials, the school provides the location - and the kids supply the effort. Voila!

Helping your kids in the crucial area of home study will benefit them greatly in the long term.
