It might seem that all that is needed to become a calligrapher of note is a pen, paper and some time to practice. But the truth is that calligraphy is arguably the ultimate example of the art of handwriting. A vast array of calligraphy supplies and tools exist that can play a part in enhancing the efforts of both new and more experienced calligraphers, helping them to best develop their skills. There are many items connected with the art of hand writing, from pens and nibs to the paper that is written on, as well as extra items such as luxury envelopes in which to place the finished product. Another tasteful finishing touch to the project is a wax seal that can be used to seal the envelope, adding a certain grandeur to everything. However, there are some supplies that are simply essential if anyone wishes to take up or continue their work as a calligrapher. Amongst them are nibs, quills, ink sets and, of course, the quality of paper that should be written on. Each of these can contribute to finely written figures and letters, which is precisely the intent when practicing calligraphy. Nibs Set When it comes to calligraphy, the significance of a nib is far greater than when one is simply handwriting a note with a pen or pencil. Typically, a nib set will provide the user with a wooden nib holder, or pen, and a range of six or more nibs providing for the different styles of script and calligraphy. An accompanying bottle of ink is also customary to get the user started. Ink Set Indeed, the ink is vital and there is a vast range of product brands and types available. Typically, a good calligraphy ink is water based and so less viscous than the printing ink that is used in coloured photocopiers and printers. Depending on the style of writing to be done, the ink consistency can be set with more or less water added. Also, the inks can be mixed to create the right colour too, with different styles traditionally using different hues. For example, Persian script usually uses a more reddish brown color. A set of calligraphy ink generally includes four to six 10ml bottles of different colours, though black, red and green are agreed to be musts. The set usually includes a stylus and two or three nibs to set the user on their way. Quills Set The quill is a stereotypical tool of the calligrapher, but the user does not have to have a huge amount of experience before advancing to it. In fact, most quills come in a regulation size and weight, allowing for easy assimilation to what might look a major step up for the beginner. Most beginners sets come with a bottle of ink supplied and a quill with a well designed nib, though more substantial sets include a range of nibs. Paper The quality of the paper used to write on is very important. The common, every day paper is not actually ideal, though laserjet paper is better with oil based ink. However the best paper to use is parchment or vellum, both of which are easily found amongst the range of calligraphy supplies in any stationary store. These types of paper are able to more effectively absorb the water based ink, and allows for a smoother movement under nib or brush without seeing either slip. The paper also looks more the part, and with luxury envelopes to slide the finished document into, and wax seal pressed with a coat of arms, the total effect is easily achieved impressively.

Just wanted to see what experiences people have had with red envelopes outside of weddings/new years/bonuses. Could be fruit gift sets or expensive flowers as well. Now be honest esl teachers!

I have received lots of different kinds of food. My best gift was a cup I still occasionally use. Cards are common, soaps, pillows, blankets, etc. Its actually kind of irritating to figure what to do with some of the gifts. If I cant use it, it gets given away or tossed into the dumpster.
Gifts in 99% of the cases will not end up changing the students marks, however. Usually the gifts are female-teacher oriented and part of a mass gift giving campaign that the parents groups do every holiday. (Soaps, shampoos, spa gift certificates... nice stuff, but it all goes to the wife. Sigh.) Not many gift giving campaigns target western teachers well.
Unfortunately my desire for pomelos, mooncakes, rice triangles wore out after my first year after trying them and finding they murder my blood sugars and generally don't taste good to me. I much prefer apples, oranges, mangoes, lychees, or chocolates, not many westerners have a taste for the more bitter tasting items commonly associated with holidays out here. The traditional Milk candy from central Taiwan doesn't do anything for me. Anything Green Tea flavored is out into the dumpster for most of the teachers in my former office. Dried fish tends to be sent into the dumpsters of the nation. Some people like getting jerky... but maybe about 15% of western people will take it beyond a small bite to test its edibility to be polite.
Some better gifts for male teachers is gift certificates to movie theaters or book stores. Coffee mugs are nice. Some of the better gifts I like to get would be artwork produced by the students themselves or a recording of the student performing a musical piece or even art produced by the parents. Blankets were nice, pillows were useful. A good stand-by is to purchase a round of milk tea for everyone in the office.
In all honesty, if someone really wanted to bribe me, I would rather get a red envelope with a fat-ass wad of cash. I probably would accept it, but not improve the kid's mark (unless that was a REALLY large sum of cash- and it would never get the kid an A or a B- but it might get them bumped from a just-fail to a minimal D or even a not quite C to a minimal C- which is standard for the private educational system operating in Taiwan and the USA and Canada these days.). That makes me a bit of a butt-head I realize, but if a kid wants to improve his mark to get a class A mark he needs to work it for his or herself. Probably most people realize that by now that I don't give away higher marks- it is easy to pass my class at a minimal level (as it is in ANY school in Taiwan- we are specifically instructed to NOT fail anyone, even those who badly need the bitter taste of failure to wake up.)
At new years most western people I know are lucky to get anything. I hear all these stories about companies giving out 1 month or 2 month bonus salaries to their workers... but the most I ever got was winning a 2000 NT red envelope at the wei-ya. Sigh. The trials of being an unappreciated teacher. LOL. It is the cost of living and climate and wife that keeps me staying on here, it isn't the tips, although sometimes I wish there was better incentives at times.
