Shrink Wrap by Gareth Hoyle1
Shrink Wrapping is a packaging process that is used by many retailers and distributors who need to prepare, transport, present and preserve products. Clearly, it's essential that products reach customers in perfect condition and that damage in transit can be avoided. Shrink wrapping can be used to strengthen and protect goods as they are delivered to the retail outlet. Shrink wrapping also helps to keep products clean and it can be used to provide tamper resistance or tamper evidence. Shrink wrapping is also useful where several individual products need to be unitised, for example, where you want to attach one product to another to form a single bundle for a special offer or other promotion.
Shrink wrapping is possible because certain plastic molecules or polymers can be made to contract when they are exposed to heat. Try to visualise a bowl of spaghetti with all of the individual strands intermingled and twisted around one another. Plastic molecules are rather like this in their natural state. The manufacture of a shrink wrap product involves pulling the molecules, or spaghetti, out so that they are straight and uniform. This is done by cooling the material while stretching forces are applied. The material then stays like this, in this stretched out state, until heat is applied. The heat gives the molecules the energy they need to recoil back into their original twisted shape and as they do this the material shrinks in size. Shrink wrap plastics can be made to contract in one direction or two directions depending upon the way they are stretched out and cooled during the manufacturing process.
The two main plastics that are used for shrink wrapping are polyvinylchloride (PVC) and polyolefin. These are both polymers which have those long, stringy molecules that like to curl up. Polyolefin is the newer product and this has become the mostly commonly used plastic as it is more durable than PVC and is odour free.
The use of shrink wrap plastics is very simple and convenient. The process simply involves enclosing the product in the shrink wrap plastic and applying heat. This can be done using a heat tunnel on a conveyor belt, an oven or a portable hot air blower. This flexibility means that just about any product can be shrink wrapped. Individual products, boxes and whole pallets can be shrink wrapped to provide protection or make them more stable and convenient to transport and there is even a company in the UK that shrink wraps yachts and motor boats to provide weather protection over winter!
Shrink wrapping also has a number of applications in the food industry. Because the modern plastics are odour free and an airtight seal can be achieved, shrink wrapping is an ideal method of preserving perishable food stuffs such as meat and vegetables.
