Polyurethane (PU) foams are very good general purpose foams which are ideally suited to many everyday applications. Here is a brief overview of the different types of polyurethane foams available and their respective qualities:
Polyether PU Foams
Polyether foams tend to be the softest grades of foam and are generally used in retail and low cost applications. Polyether foams are typically used in furniture products and sponges.
Polyester PU Foams
Polyester foams have better physical properties than polyether foams so they are frequently used where better performance is needed. Car buffing pads and sun visors are good examples of polyester foam use.
Reticulated Foams
A special type of polyurethane foam, which uses a special process called Reticulation to give a consistently open cell size. This creates a product which is ideally suited to filtration applications such as air filters.
Felted Foams
These are specially treated, reticulated foams which are compressed under heat until the foam sets. When fluids such as ink come into contact, the resultant foam exerts a capillary action, which retains the fluid like a reservoir. These foams are typically used in fluid products such as inkpads and inkjet cartridges.
Microcellular PU Foams
These are special grades of flexible, high density foam which are highly resilient and have excellent resistance to compression collapse. They also have great vibration damping and impact absorption qualities, and can continue to perform after repeated deflection. Some of the more common uses include gaskets and seals for small electronic devices.
Visco Elastic Foam
Visco elastic foams offer a great combination of conflicting properties that are well suited to comfort management and protective cushioning applications. When exposed to warmth, these foams soften and conform to give gentle, pressure-free support. Generally, these foams are used for comfort products such as wheelchair cushions, mattresses and bicycle seats.
